History
Hernando de Soto passed, through the northeastern
part of today's federal state 1539 he reached beginning 1541 the
Mississippi. From 1681 to 1682 Robert Cavelier drove on the Mississippi
up to his muzzle, the complete valley took Ludwig XIV in the name of
the French king. into possession and the country mentioned Louisiana.
First settlement
The
first attempt to found a colony became 1699 of Pierre Le Moyne done.
1716 set up Fort Rosalie the Frenchmen in the place of today's Natchez.
After the war with Great Britain France 1763 had to hand over his
territories eastern of the Mississippi to Great Britain with the
exception of New Orleans. The brits divided these possessions up into
east and Westflorida. Westflorida became a part of today's federal
state Mississippi. Spain occupied the southern part of today's
Mississippi had it to hand over 1795 to the USA 1779, this one. 1798
became the territory Mississippi formed, the 1812 contained the area of
today's Mississippi and Alabama. Mississippi was included in the union
without Alabama as a federal state on December 10th, 1817.
Statehood of one's own
On
January 9th, 1861 Mississippi left the union, it became beginning 1870
(five years after the American civil war) again taken. During the war a
large portion of the federal state was destroyed, the industrial
progress at the end of the 19th century contributed to an improvement
in the economic situation, though.
Since the beginning of the
20th century the lumber industry gained increasing meaning, by the

economically. Mineral oil was discovered with Tinsley and Vaughan
around the forties of the 20th century. The industrial development
continued during the 2nd World War.
It came to violent
disturbances in Mississippi between white and black population layers
in the sixties. Only since 1962 the University of Mississippi is
accessible also for blacks. The first black was elected to the
parliament of the federal state in 1967.
The government of the
federal state tried in the eighties to activate the economic growth as
well as to improve the education and other social services.
