Strategic Plan

Introduction
During the fall of 2007, the Mississippi AHEAD Executive Council undertook the important task of creating a strategic plan for the organization with vision and commitment to a strong future. The strategic plan below centers on five goals, each of which are supported by specific activities to ensure implementation. It is the intention of the Executive Council to review and update the Strategic Plan on an ongoing basis in order to enhance the growth and maturity of the Association. The Executive Council welcomes member input in this ongoing process.


Goal I: To continue the development, implementation, maintenance and evaluation of a quality association infrastructure to meet current needs and anticipate future trends regarding issues surrounding students with disabilities in higher education.

Objectives

  • Continually assess and improve internal structure for stakeholder communication
  • Provide on-going training to the Mississippi AHEAD leadership regarding issues essential to the management and sustainability of the Association
  • Secure effective funding streams in support of association goals and activities
  • Develop and continually review the internal organizational plan to ensure the fiscal responsibility, growth and sustainability of Mississippi AHEAD
  • Initiate and complete non-profit status
  • Maintain the professional and ethical conduct of our members
  • Formalize structure for SIG participation and accountability
  • Broaden the membership base
  • Develop a comprehensive marketing plan in support of Mississippi AHEAD's mission
  • Continually assess and improve the web-based presence of Mississippi AHEAD
  • Collaborate with other organizations and constituencies
  • Develop membership incentives, increase member involvement and leadership


Goal II: To promote and embody diversity.

Objectives

  • Assess the identity of Mississippi AHEAD through survey instruments designed to gather demographic and other relevant information about its members
  • Identify, collect, and assess critical information to ensure all activities are consistent with the Mississippi AHEAD inclusion statement
  • Establish task force on inclusiveness, as needed, based upon collected data and membership's critical needs


Goal III: To provide professional development and services for our members by creating and maintaining standards, ethics and guidelines to inform our practice.

Objectives
  • Serve as the premier statewide provider of related professional development opportunities, training, and publications of all types
  • Develop, review, and update professional ethics and standards for Mississippi AHEAD members
  • Provide leadership in data collection, research and publications promoting, assessing and documenting the status of persons with disabilities in higher education in Mississippi
  • Create opportunities for members to foster research
  • Improve the postsecondary integration and inclusion of students with developmental, cognitive, sensory, physical, psychological and other disabilities through the increase in the quality and number of accommodations, services and supports available at postsecondary institutions in Mississippi


Goal IV: To serve as a resource to institutions of higher education, students, parents and related organizations to promote awareness, advocacy and empowerment of students with disabilities in higher education.

Objectives

  • Serve as the premier statewide provider of training opportunities and information dissemination
  • Provide information on disability sensitivity, resources, trends, and current legal rulings to institutions of higher education, students, parents, high schools, and other constituents of Mississippi AHEAD.
  • Offer transition training and resources to a broad audience group


Goal V: To provide leadership in higher education through policy development and advocacy for pertinent issues.

Objectives

  • Encourage systemic change regarding access issues for students with disabilities
    Inform members of legislative issues
  • Provide input to the legislature with regard to issues affecting students with disabilities
  • Influence higher education leadership and faculty to include disability
    access and institutional responsibility in their planning and development
  • Provide resources to promote universal design of programs and services, including but not limited to facilities, curriculum, administrative services, classroom and web-based technology, campus climate, emergency preparedness, and other critical areas.
